Playa Blanca Has Original Character

February 8, 2010 by greenday2406

The Canary Islands are less than four hours flying time from the UK, with charter flights from most provincial airports and scheduled BA flights from both Manchester and London Gatwick.

They are an ideal all year round choice for a relaxing break.

Lying just north of the tropics, sharing latitude with Orlando, Florida and Elat in Jordan, the Spanish owned Canaries promise as near to guaranteed year round sun as you could find.

Lanzarote is just 100 miles from the Western Sahara coast of Africa and is less frenetic than either Tenerife or Grand Canaria.

Lanzarote also boasts some of the finest golden sand beaches in the Canaries. Many of these are in the Papagayo National Park which is only a short drive, boat ride or, for the more energetic, walk from Playa Blanca.

The wild empty sand beaches of the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura are only a 20 minute ferry ride away.

Lanzarote is an island of contrasts pretty white villages with an absence of high rise, an artistic inheritance from its famous native Lanzarotean, Cesar Manrique, and a unique landscape shaped by its explosive past.

One spectacular sight is the Timanfaya National Park, a vast area of volcanic lava and rust coloured mountains only a 20 minute drive from Playa Blanca.

Playa Blanca is a former fishing settlement nestling on a sheltered, south facing bay with views of the misty mountains of the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura across the strait.

It has a traffic free, paved promenade lined with good quality al fresco restaurants, boutiques and gift shops and at its centre a small, sandy family beach. This paved promenade stretches some 10 km from El Pechiguera lighthouse at the southern tip of Lanzarote all the way to the fabulous new Rubicon Marina with its quality restaurants and designer shops surrounding floating jetties lined with yachts and motor cruisers of all shapes and sizes.

Although Playa Blanca has seen some dramatic changes over the past few years it still retains much of its original character and has become a prestigious neon free family resort in a delightful setting. As well as the town beach there are two larger sandy beaches a short walk away on either side of the town.

Playa Flamingo, ideal for younger families and Playa Dorada for those looking for perfect swimming conditions. Both of these beaches offer water sports, all are well served with restaurants and beach facilities and all beaches is an easy walk from Casa Margarita.

Only a short drive away or a boat trip from the harbour is the amazing beaches of the Papagayo National Park. Whilst short on facilities and lacking in shade they are in a spectacular setting and well worth a visit.

Paths Well Traveled

February 6, 2010 by greenday2406

Ever wonder where everyone is going? The Source US department of Commerce, International Trade Administration, Office of Travel and Tourism Industries lists the top ten international travel destinations from the United States. The top destination is of course Europe, followed by the Caribbean, Mexico, Asia and Canada. The Caribbean destination is the top cruise destination accounting for 40% of itineraries. The last five destinations are South America, Central America, Oceania, the Middle East and Africa. Better get your passports ready! Remember there are new passport regulations requiring passports whenever you leave the country and the passport office is running behind with requests. Remember to organize your entire travel plans as the airports and cruise lines are busy and seem to be running to capacity. Travel agents and luggage stores are good sources to research travel information. There are loads of books written and everything is also available on the web. Keep in mind the smaller carryon sizes for International destinations and the new weight restriction on baggage. You’ll want to pack lightweight luggage to keep within the 50lb. restrictions. Plan ahead and your travel plans should run smoothly.
The US Department of Transportation lists the top domestic airplane routes. This information is based on enplaned passengers of all airports for a city pair from November of 2005 to October of 2006. Anyone who’s traveled to or from these destinations can testify to the accuracy. Number one is New York to Chicago with 3.14 million passengers a year. Chicago is followed by Ft. Lauderdale to New York, Los Angles to Chicago, Atlanta to New York, Washington, DC to Chicago, Denver to Chicago, Atlanta to Washington, DC, Atlanta to Orlando, New York to Orlando, and last is Las Vegas to Chicago. Orlando is home of Disney World along with many other attractions. The number 10 destination is Las Vegas to Chicago and they handle 2.42 million passengers a year. That’s a lot of travelers flying in and out of these busy airports. When booking your travel plans, remember to keep up with security rules and requirements. The trip is easier and will go more smoothly if you are prepared. Using the TSA locks on your luggage shows that you have been researching and are adhering to the airline rules. The 3-1-1cosmetic case for your liquids and gels in your carryon bags is the newest of the regulations. Now you’ll need to pack the majority of your cosmetics and toiletries in your discount luggage. Any liquids or gels in your carryon bag must fit into a quart-sized bag zippered bag.
Luckily there’s a huge selection of travel accessories designed to make your travel experience easier and more rewarding. Be sure to investigate everything that’s available before your trip. No use finding out the airlines aren’t offering travel pillows or blankets when you have already boarded. Many corporate gifts now include all of these wonderful travel items that we don’t like to do without. There are wonderful eye-shades, and inflatable back or head pillows to make the trip more comfortable. There’s a huge array of travel money belts and hotel door alarms to make the trip safer. There are travel jackets that are reversible and travel shoes that can change color enabling you to pack less while still having a selection of color. There are wrist-bands to ward off nausea and No Jet-lag to take away time changes. There’s packing cubes to make packing or unpacking a breeze. Check out all that’s available to make the trip more enjoyable.
I always like to pack the “what ifs.” Take along one of the new lightweight umbrellas or small travel raincoats. Bring some travel laundry soap in case you need to clean up. Take a folding tote that will bring back the purchases which you could not resist. A luggage strap can keep your overstuffed case from popping open. Bright luggage tags will help you to identify your bags quickly. A travel wallet will keep your passport and other necessary papers organized and in one place. Shoe covers will let you pack dirty shoes back into your case. Now choose one of these exciting destinations and have a wonderful trip!

Minnesota Golf Courses: Mille Lacs Golf Resort and Marina

February 2, 2010 by greenday2406

If you take a poll of true Minnesotans and you ask them to name areas of the state that are traditional vacation destinations, the Mille Lacs Lake area is certain to be in the top five locations for the majority of those polled. Taking a trip to Mille Lacs is one that nearly every Minnesotan has made. A trip to Mille Lacs is similar to attending the Minnesota State Fair or going to the State Capitol building on a field trip as a 5th grade student, everybody does it.

Just off of U.S. Highway 169 and an easy 90-minute drive north from the Twin Cities, just six miles south of Garrison, there is a golf course that has been open since 1964. There have been some changes made during the past couple of seasons and more changes that will be taking place in the months and years ahead. Welcome to Mille Lacs Golf Resort and Marina featuring Hardwoods Golf Club. Future plans include a new log design clubhouse and restaurant, a 35,000 square foot indoor water park, a day spa, a 120-unit hotel condo building and many more amenities planned for the future. There is also the option of purchasing or renting single-family homes and townhouses which feature log design.

There are some changes in the future for Hardwoods Golf Club. There are some plans on the drawing board to stretch the 6,309 yard course a bit by adding some length to a couple of the tee boxes and converting one of the longer par-4 holes into a par-5 making the course a par-72. The addition of some strategically placed bunkers is on the drawing board as well. In it’s current design Hardwoods Golf Club plays to a par-71 with a course rating of 69.7 and a slope index of 119. Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security by looking at the yardage on the scorecard and thinking you can overpower this golf course. If you are an accurate ball-striker and an above average putter you can score well, but if you let your guard down this golf course will have you for lunch. All of the greens are small, elevated and have enough undulation to keep you on top of your putting game. The greens at Hardwoods Golf Club have been described as Pinehurst-like, and I would agree with this statement.

General Manager Trent Christenson along with his management staff of, Jim Resch- Head Golf Professional, Justin Heitkamp- Pro Shop Manager and Bob Weston-Golf Course Superintendent, do a fine job of making patrons feel welcome as well as keeping the facility in fine condition.

The weekend rate of $45.00 per person with a cart is quite reasonable for this resort destination. Seniors can golf on any Monday or Wednesday for $25.00 per person with a cart making this an even better value. For tee times call 1-800-435-8720 or visit their website at www.millelacsgolf.com

With the planned additions to the Hardwoods Golf Club as well as the planned expansion to the resort facilities, Mille Lacs Golf Resort and Marina featuring Hardwoods Golf Club is a destination you will want to bring your family to again and again.

San Diego Inside and Out

January 27, 2010 by greenday2406

With its year-round tropical climate, San Diego, California, is one of the most popular vacation spots for tourists around the globe. From sailing and hiking to surfing and skiing, the city offers a plethora of activities. What’s more is that San Diego is a hop, skip and a jump away from Tijuana—an exciting alternative to California living.

San Diego is comprised of several communities all offering a unique personality. Deemed an official U.S. naval city, San Diego is home to thousands of military personnel. In fact, one third of the U.S. Naval Pacific Fleet is stationed in San Diego Bay. The city’s abundant access to water makes it an ideal location for our country’s seamen. San Diego is a hub for recreational sailors, too.

Seaport Village is home to several luxury yachts as well as a wide variety of charter services. Spend a day at sea whale watching or just kick back and enjoy San Diego’s beautiful coastline.

Head to what is considered North County and pay a visit to the Del Mar Fairgrounds. From mid-July to early September, the fairgrounds are converted into the legendary Del Mar Racetrack. The horseracing venue once served as a stomping ground for some of the world’s most influential entertainers such as Jimmy Durante, Ava Gardner, Pat O’Brien, and of course the legendary Seabiscuit. Another notable, Bing Crosby, not only frequented the track, but founded it in 1937.

Crosby is the voice behind the famous “Where the Turf Meets the Surf” anthem. Opening day draws massive crowds, all adorned in the finest fashions and many participating in the infamous “Big Hat Day” festivities. With plenty of grandstand boxes available, a vast amount of local eateries and private clubs, the Del Mar Racetrack is the place to see-and be-seen.

In the heart of the city you will find Mission Valley—a central haven for some of San Diego’s best shopping. The outdoor Fashion Valley Mall features designer boutiques as well as premiere department store giants including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Bloomingdales. Just one exit away is Qualcomm Stadium, home to the San Diego Chargers.

San Diego’s downtown Gaslamp District boasts plenty of boutiques, top-notch restaurants, five-star luxury hotels, and a whole street lined with some of the city’s most popular nightclubs. A newer addition to the downtown area is the state-of-the-art San Diego Padre’s stadium, Petco Park. The Gaslamp District caters to the swarms of tourists by offering activities such as sight-seeing charter buses, pedicabs and horse-drawn carriage rides.

And with the city’s trolley system in place the perils of parking are easily avoided. Luxury hotels in San Diego include the Manchester Grand Hyatt, Hotel Solamar, Horton Grand Hotel, The Omni, The Westin Horton Plaza, The W San Diego, the Hard Rock Hotel, the Westgate Hotel, and more. Take a closer look at luxury hotels in San Diego.

Experience California’s history while strolling through Old Town San Diego. As the first European settlement in what is now California, Old Town has been dubbed the state’s birthplace. The cultural landmark- home to the first California mission showcases Spanish history through its Bazaar del Mundo. Another popular attraction is the oh-so-creepy Whaley house, which offers insight into what some people call Haunted San Diego.

When people think of San Diego the thought of bikini-clad beaches is often what first enters their heads. San Diego has earned this reputation for good reason as its coastline offers some of California’s best natural beaches. There are plenty of beach communities that seem to cater to every stereotype out there.

First off, there is the overcrowded (but fabulous) Pacific Beach, which offers party-goers a wide variety of hotspots all within walking distance from each other. Travel a little south and you will hit Mission Beach, which offers all the perks of P.B. with the added luxury of Belmont Park. Keep heading south and you will end up in Ocean Beach, a small community filled with vintage shops, dive bars, and some wonderful undiscovered little cafes and restaurants.
San Diego Bay is yet another popular destination, known mainly for its ample water-sports.

And with neighboring mountain ranges in close proximity, San Diego is ideal for avid skiers and snowboarders alike. The kiddos will enjoy the famous San Diego Zoo, Wildlife Park, and Legoland. And adults will find a playground of their own as the county also offers several Indian gaming sites, casinos and luxury resorts.

With so many well-traveled attractions and tourist destinations, San Diego has experienced rapid growth. This means that those looking for investment opportunities will find a surplus of resources in its flourishing market. Some of San Diego’s most prime real estate is located in the coastal community of La Jolla, as well as in the high-rising downtown condominiums and lofts.

The Where, When, And What Of Traveling With Kids

January 25, 2010 by greenday2406

With a little bit of planning and preparation, traveling with kids can be easy as a walk in the park; well almost. The key to traveling with kids is to stop thinking of it as a business trip that is planned with military precision. Instead, think of it as an adventure; expect the unexpected and go with the flow. Minor mishaps happen and it’s nothing to explode about. It’s just part of the excitement of traveling with kids. Go with the right attitude and you and your kids are likely to have a fun time, mishaps and all.

Having said that, do yourself and your kids, and do spend some time making preparations so as to avoid unnecessary distress. A few things you need to think about would include where to stay, when to go and what to take.

Where to Stay

Planning on booking that hotel you stayed in during your last business meeting would be a definite disaster. Instead, look for a hotel that is more kid-friendly with plenty of place for kids to run around in, a swimming pool, a games room or perhaps a kid’s room. Several hotels organize special movies, magic shows and other kinds of kid’s entertainment every evening. It provides kids with the perfect opportunity to meet up with and mingle with other kids of all ages while the two of you have a romantic meal and some quiet time together.

When to Go

If you have a choice, avoid booking a flight that leaves very early in the morning. If you have to leave your house at midnight you are going to be juggling suitcases as well as a handful of cranky zombies. Choose your timing well. If your travel involves crossing time zones, keep in mind the time of departure as well as the time it will be at your destination.

What to Take

Medicines are a must when you are traveling with kids. You don’t want to be lugging a sick child and looking for a drug store in the middle of the night in a strange city. Carry essential cough, cold and fever medications as well as emergency supplies of band-aids. Carry sufficient anti-allergy medication if your child takes any.

Don’t forget to take along enough books to read, crayons and coloring books and a few travel board games so the kids can entertain themselves in between outdoor excursions and sightseeing trips. Avoid carrying toys with lots of small, moving parts that are likely to get vacuumed away by over-conscientious housekeeping.

Why Go On A City Break?

January 24, 2010 by greenday2406

If you feel like you need a break but can’t get the time off work for a proper holiday then a city break could be perfect for you. Even though you’re not going away for two weeks it’s still a great way to get away for a bit and relax.

People go on a city break for many different reasons with the main one being that they just want to get away for a couple days. This is the ideal way to relax and have fun without having to spend too much money or taking a lot of time off work.

With so many cheap airlines and package deals available nowadays, more and more people are going on a city break. Several years ago if you went away you would do so for a week or two to make it worthwhile the flight prices. Whereas now you can get flights for less than a train fare so going away for a long weekend seems worthwhile.

Some people go on a city break because they may have always wanted to go somewhere but haven’t been sure if they would want to spend a whole holiday there. Going there for a couple days is the best way to get a taster for the place to see if you really like it. If you do really like it then you can always return for a longer breaker some other time.

With so many people moving abroad nowadays chances are that you have friends abroad somewhere. While a city break is a great opportunity to see friends and get away for a couple days, sometimes it can feel like you’re inconveniencing others if you’re staying with them or they’re showing you the sights. By just staying for a couple days you get to catch up without feeling like a nuisance.

Another reason why many people choose to go on a city break is because they may be going for a reason that only requires them to be there for a couple days. For example, stag and hen weekends are becoming increasingly popular so a lot of people want to go abroad with a group of friends for a couple days.

It’s easy to see why going on a city break is becoming increasingly popular with many people. With thousands of good deals available for short breaks it’s the perfect way to pick up a bargain and have a fun, unique weekend as well.

I Love Touring Italy – Friuli-Venezia Giuli

January 21, 2010 by greenday2406

If you feel like a European tourist destination, you should really consider the Friuli-Venezia Giuli region of northeastern Italy, bordering on Austria and Slovenia. For simplicity’s sake we abbreviate the region’s full name to Friuli. Depending on your particular interests, Friuli may be an ideal vacation spot. You can get classic Italian food and other specialties, and wash them down with fine local wine. While Friuli is hardly undiscovered by tourists you usually won’t be fighting crowds to see what you want. Like most regions of Italy it has belonged to many nations over the years. Unlike most other regions of Italy, it remains multicultural. Friuli is quite an exceptional mixture of Italian, Austrian, and Slavic influences. This article explores Friuli except for its capital and largest city, Trieste, which is examined in a companion article.

We’ll start our tour of Friuli at Redipuglia about twenty five miles (thirty five kilometers) northwest of Trieste. Next we head northeast to the city of Gorizia almost hugging the Slovenian border. Then we proceed north to Cividale del Friuli. There we turn left (west) and finish our tour in Udine.

Italy’s largest war memorial, the Redipuglia Military Memorial built during Mussolini’s rule, lies inland from the Gulf of Trieste. Here repose the remains of nearly forty thousand known and more than sixty thousand unknown Italian soldiers of World War I. A bit further west are the remains of more than fourteen thousand Austro-Hungarian soldiers of World War I.

Gorizia, population about twenty five thousand, is quite close to the Slovenian border. In fact one of its suburbs, Nova Gorica, is in Slovenia. The Transalpina Railway Square that fed the port of Trieste actually lies in both countries. The nearby Sacrario Militare (Military Shrine) of Oslavia, is the burial place of over fifty seven thousand soldiers of World War I.

Gorizia’s old city is known as Borgo Castello in honor of the medieval castle surrounded by Sixth Century walls. It has quite a collection of Venetian art. You’ll also want to see the Gothic Fourteenth Century Church of San Spirito, the Baroque Seventeenth-Eighteenth Century church of San Ignazio, the Sixteenth Century Duomo (Cathedral) and its frescoes, and the Baroque Eighteenth Century Palazzo Attems.

This town is home to several palaces including the Sixteenth Century Coronini Cronberg filled with Eighteenth Century Venetian lacquered furniture, oriental carpets, porcelain, Japanese prints and sketches, Russian silver, and Sixteenth to Twentieth Century paintings. You will find a fine library with over ten thousand volumes of manuscripts and ancient books.

Cividale del Friuli, population about eleven thousand, was founded by Julius Caesar somewhat more than two thousand years ago. Its historic town center is dominated by the Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square) home to the National Archeological Museum. Nearby you will find the Sixteenth Century Palazzo dei Provveditori Veneti. Be sure to see the Celtic Hypogeum, an ancient subterranean series of halls carved in the rock; historians don’t know if is was a Celtic funerary monument or a Roman (Lombard) jail.

The Venetian Gothic Fifteenth Century Duomo (Cathedral) was built on the remains of an Eighth Century construction. The Christian Museum next door houses several Eighth Century art relics and outstanding examples of Lombard sculpture. The Fifteenth Century Ponte del Diavolo (Bridge of the Devil) leads to the church of S. Martino which contains an Eighth Century altar. The small church of Oratorio di Santa Maria (Saint Mary’s Oratorio) in the old Lombard quarter of nearby Valle, next to the Natisone river, is a notable example of Eighth Century High Middle Ages art. Saturday is market day in downtown Gorzia as it was in the days of Julius Caesar.

Udine whose population is slightly less than one hundred thousand is a relatively recent city founded only about one thousand years ago. Unlike Trieste, the biggest city in the region, Udine belonged to the United Republic of Italy almost since its inception. The Fifteenth Century Piazza della Libertà (Freedom Square) definitely seems Venetian in style with its Palazzo del Commune (now the Town Hall) opposite the Torre dell’Orologio (Clock Tower). The square also has a lovely Sixteenth Century fountain, Seventeenth Century columns illustrating the Statue of Justice and the Venetian Lion, and statues of Hercules and of Peace.

Udine is home to several churches worth visiting. The Gothic Fourteen Century Cathedral includes a Fifteenth Century bell tower that remains unfinished. Both the Cathedral and the adjacent Oratorio della Purità (Purity Oratorio) contain lovely art works. The Lombard Saint Mary of the Castle is probably Udine’s oldest church and was extensively rebuilt after an earthquake almost five hundred years ago. Make sure to see its period frescoes.

Udine’s major attraction is its castle, situated high on a hill. According to local legend Attila the Hun built it there to watch the neighboring Roman city of Aquileia as it burnt. Twice the castle was destroyed by earthquakes. The Venetians rebuilt it without the fortress, but with a Renaissance palace that now houses the Civic Museum, the Archaeological Museum, and the Historical and Art Galleries. Enjoy the view of the Italian mountains and Slovenian plains from the walls leading to the castle entrance.

What about food? Prosciutto di San Daniele ham is the pride of Fruili. It ranks just after Prosciutto di Parma as Italy’s best ham. Production is centered in the town of San Daniele that once paid its taxes in hams. In fact this area has been known for ham prior to the Romans. But full-scale production only started about a century ago. San Daniele now sells more than two million hams a year. These hams are softer and sweeter than the competition. They are low in cholesterol, high in protein, and rich in minerals, in particular Iron, Zinc, and Vitamin B. Suggested wines to accompany them include Tocai Friulano and Ramandolo.

Let’s suggest a sample menu, one of many. Start with Gulasch di Pesce (Fish Goulash). Then try Arrosto di Capriolo al Pino (Roast Venison with Pine Needles). For dessert indulge yourself with Presniz (Pastry with Rum, Fruits, and Nuts.) Be sure to increase your dining pleasure by including local wines with your meal.

We’ll conclude this article with a quick look at Friuli wine. Friuli ranks 14th among the 20 Italian regions for acres planted in wine grapes and 13th for total wine production. Approximately 48% of its wine production is red or rosé (only a little rosé), leaving 52% for white. The region produces a total of 9 DOC wines. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine and 1 DOCG white dessert wine, Ramandolo. The G in DOCG stands for Garantita, but there is in fact no guarantee that such wines are truly superior. Over 60% of Friuli wine carries the DOC or DOCG designation, this is the second highest percentage in all Italy.

Ramandolo DOCG is a sweet white wine produced in the area north of Udine from at least 90% of the local Verduzzo grape. The vineyards are high in the sky and the slopes are so steep that the grapes must be processed and harvested by hand. Collio DOC, also called Collio Goriziano DOC, is an appellation from eastern Fruili near the Slovenian border that includes many high-quality wines. The appellation includes a variety of styles and grapes.

7 Best Tourist Attractions In Sweden

January 19, 2010 by greenday2406

Tourist attractions in Sweden are many and very varied. From Santa Claus in the north to crayfish parties, Viking adventures, the Midnight Sun and the ubiquitous smörgåsbord, this is a land of many contrasts; the tourist attractions in Sweden will not let you down. Here are 7 tourist attractions in Sweden, in no particular order, that are each well worth the visit.

1. Stockholm is the capital, and it is a great place to visit. This city will amaze you for its cleanliness and its feeling of being safe. It will amaze you for other things too. It has some wonderful museums, large peaceful parks, a nightlife that will take your breath away – literally, and architecture that sets the scene for a purely Swedish experience.

2. Forget Loch Ness in Scotland; come to Storsjön in Jämtland province. This huge lake has a legend to rival Loch Ness, a monster that even enjoys the protection of the law! And if you fail to spot the monster, the general area around Storsjön is still worth the visit; the scenery alone will simply astound you.

3. Inlandsbanan is the inland railway. If you are a train lover, then this is a train ride not to be missed. You can travel across the Arctic Circle, get off when you want, get back on again – it’s your choice. The 1,300 kilometer journey goes all the way up to Lappland in the north, and to Kristinehamn further south.

4. You probably associate European beaches with the Spanish Costas, or the Greek islands, but Sweden has plenty to offer too. The island of Gotland in the Baltic has some excellent beaches, and coupled with the surprisingly warm summer weather they can expect most years, this is definitely a destination for those who want to be in a northern country, but still lounge on the beach.

5. If you like traveling on water, why not take a trip on the Göta Canal. You can travel southeast to northwest across the country from Gothenburg to Stockholm on an old ship. You will cross a river, eight lakes and three canals. You will also pass through 66 locks and travel, albeit briefly, on two seas. There are few journeys that can boast that degree of variety!

6. If you enjoy hiking, then this will be one of your favorite tourist attractions in Sweden; the famous hiking trail of Kungsleden. The trail snakes over 500 kilometers from Hemaven to Abisko. It is well marked out and extremely popular. There are cabins along the route of the trail, but in the holiday season these can become very popular and crowded.

7. If you love rugged scenery in a rural natural setting, then Bohuslän is for you. This is the area. More or less, between the Norwegian border in the north, to Gothenburg to the south. There are a multitude of small rocky islands with little fishing villages nestled in between. The scenery is almost surreal and well worth a visit. This must rank as one of the better of the tourist attractions in Sweden.

Vacationing in the Hawaiian Islands

January 18, 2010 by greenday2406

The Hawaiian Islands are one of the most sought-after travel & vacation destinations in the world. Hawaii has 6 major islands consisting of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and the largest island of them all, Hawaii… more commonly called the Big Island. The big Island of Hawaii is about the size of Connecticut and is also the youngest of the islands, approximately 800,000 years old.

Planning a Hawaii Vacation

When planning a Hawaii vacation, more and more travelers are choosing to stay in a privately-owned vacation rental home for both comfort and price effectiveness. However, whether you choose an ocean view hotel, oceanfront vacation home, or a cozy villa tucked away in the countryside, you’ll find your Hawaii vacation totally refreshing with a myriad of opportunities for adventure, sightseeing, discovery and relaxing. You will also find that each of the Hawaiian Islands has a unique personality. Three of Hawaii’s beaches made the top 10 list of TripAdvisor in the U.S.: Oahu (#3) Kailua Beach Park for powder white sand beach. kauai (#6) Tunnels Beach for remarkable snorkeling and outstanding views. Oahu (#10) Waimea Bay Beach Park for its calm, clear water during the summer. With that said, let these award-winning locations be a guide when planning your Hawaii vacation.

Hawaiian History

To fully appreciate Hawaii and its heritage, travelers are encouraged to learn a little about Hawaii’s history prior to (or during) their Hawaii vacation.

In 1778, Captain James Cook landed on the island called Kauai at Waimea Bay. He named the archipelago the “Sandwich Islands” in honor of the Earl of Sandwich. Captain Cook was the man responsible for opening the doors to the west. Unfortunately, he was killed just one year later on the Big Island of Hawaii in kealakekua Bay.

Hawaii (as a state) was admitted to the Union on Aug 21st, 1959, making it the 50th state of the United States of America. This group of islands was formed from past and current volcanic activity. Current volcanic activity can be found on the Big Island of Hawaii, while all volcanic activity on all the other Hawaiian Islands has been dormant for thousands of years.

At about 1,860 miles (3,000 km) from the nearest continent, the Hawaiian Island archipelago is the most isolated grouping of islands on the planet. The entire Hawaiian archipelago chain is 1,500 miles long with the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands disappearing beneath the ocean’s surface due to millions of years of erosion.
